New WV online casino requirements
Only a land-based casino operating within the state limits of West Virginia can apply for a master iGaming license. The license permits the casino to have up to three online skins.
Any new online casinos must be accepted by the West Virginia Lottery Commission which licenses and regulates the local casino industry.
The license is valid for 270 days and the fee for it is $250,000. The renewal costs $100,000. Software providers of the online casino also must pay a fee of $10,000 to operate in West Virginia. In addition, the state of WV also implements a 15% tax on gross online gambling revenue.
The future of new WV online casinos
With the current legislature, the future of new online casinos in West Virginia can be predicted fairly easily. As there is a clear limit on how many online casinos each land-based casino can partner with, we can keep track of how many new casinos there can be.
Between July 2020 and January 2022, a new online casino launched approximately every three months. If this pace keeps up, the maximum number of WV online casinos would be reached by early 2024.
However, this doesn't necessarily mean the end of the new casinos in West Virginia even if the limit is reached. Online casinos can decide to pull out of the market or cease operations for some other reasons, making way for all new casinos to jump in. It's not impossible for the gambling laws to be revised, either.
